License & Reuse
Last updated October 25, 2026
Every airfield sign you make here, as a PNG or an SVG, is in thepublic domain, marked with theCreative Commons Public Domain Mark 1.0. Use it for anything: print it, sell it, edit it, put it in a book, a game or a slide deck. You don’t need to ask, and you don’t need to credit us, though a link back is always appreciated.
Why it’s public domain
The designs come from U.S. government standards, and U.S. Government works have no copyright. The site draws them with code, using only public-domain fonts and artwork. Some of the content, like the humor signs’ wording, was written with AI help, and AI-made material can’t be copyrighted under current U.S. Copyright Office guidance. To the extent any rights in these images exist, we claim none and won’t enforce any.
What it doesn’t cover
- Your own text. Words you type onto a sign are yours. We don’t claim them.
- Trademarks and insignia. The public domain mark is about copyright. A brand name on a sign is still its owner’s trademark, and laws about agency insignia, and about making a sign look official, still apply.
- Putting a sign up for real. An official sign has to meet its standard and be approved by the authority responsible. See theTerms of Service.
PNG and SVG files
PNG and SVG are open, royalty-free formats, so there’s nothing to license to use them. Every downloaded file carries a little metadata: the public domain mark, a credit to the Build-Signs.work sign generator, and a link to build the same sign again. Anyone who finds the file can tell where it came from. Keep it or strip it, it’s up to you.
Source code
The public domain mark covers the sign images, not the software. The code behind Airport-Signs.work and the shared sign service is copyrighted and licensed under theBSD 3-Clause License.
Built with AI
This site was built with the help of Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic. AI can make mistakes, and so can we. Check anything that matters against the official standard, and don’t rely on the site for navigation, legal, safety or engineering decisions. SeeBuilt with AI in the Terms of Service.
